Finally in Iraq
For those of you keeping track, I am now finally in Iraq. I believe it is safe to say that I am at a place called [edited out], a logistical base for the Coalition Forces. If the local terrorists don’t know a new unit has pulled into town, they will soon enough with our patches predominately displayed at the front gate.
I don’t have time to go into great detail about this particular post, other than to say it is a former Iraqi air base that the US has converted to its own use. Most of the buildings are run down, and left over from the previous landlords.
As far as potential for attack, this base has received only light attacks over the last year. There was no damage during any of those attacks. The bad guys are bad shots and the stand-off distance where we can see out is substantial. Basically, they’d have to work very hard to either get on the base or attack it with any success. There’s always the IED threat, but it sounds like we won’t be traveling much, and when we do it will almost always be by helicopter. So, there’s a neglible chance of myself encountering an IED.
I’ll pass along some more substantial observations in the coming days. Just wanted you all to know we got here in one piece.
For my family, if anyone is thinking of Christmas presents, this is what would be nice to have. We live in small rooms where there’s electricity and the possibility of satellite TV. So, these would be nice to have:
- Small color TV (13 or 14 inch)
- Small dorm-style microwave
- Small, dorm-style refrigerator
