Christmas Day and Schoomaker’s here
Dear Readers, this blog did not exist before the second week of September, 2006. Before that, I was sending mass emails to my friends and family. What follows is one of those emails, sent on the same day this post shows.
First of all, Christmas was rather surreal here. Mostly, because I had to work and I wasn’t home with the family. Really, it didn’t seem like Christmas.
Anyway, lots of excitement in other ways the last few days. As you probably know, all of the Washington big wigs and senior generals like to show up in Iraq and have dinner with the troops at Christmas. Something similar happened here too.
On 24 DEC, we had Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfield make an appearance. I actually helped set up the security for that event, so that was pretty cool. I didn’t get to meet him, because it was only a quick appearance as he changed aircraft to fly to a different location, but still a brush with greatness. We had a ton of security at the airfield in case something happened. I can’t go into details, but there was plenty of firepower.
I heard that there was video of my commander shaking his hand shown back in the United States on one of the news stations. Several of the guys were joking about going down to the airfield and giving old Rummy a piece of their mind, but thankfully, nobody did. I was dieing to tell you all about the Rumsfield visit in my last email, but that event wasn’t over yet, so for security reasons, I had to keep it quiet until he had departed the area.
Today, on Christmas, we had GEN Schoomaker here, again for only a short visit. For those of you who don’t know, he’s the top general in the U.S. Army. Again, I was involved in setting up the security for that event. It was rainy, windy, and cold all of the day, so I’m not too disappointed I missed out on standing out there on the flight line to watch it all.
I haven’t had Christmas dinner yet, but they’ve got the dining facility all decked out. Hope it’s good. I was there for lunch, thinking I was going to get the traditional Christmas dishes, but instead they had Chinese food. Not exactly what I expected. Hopefully, dinner will be better.
Ok, gotta go. I’ll talk at you all soon.
