Border issues back home
One nice thing about living in a “mature” war-time theater like Iraq is, you can get internet access in your CHU (containerized housing unit) - plus Armed Forces Network television. So, blogging, emailing, and reading news on the internet is easy. Of course, it comes at a price. I’m paying $70 a month for satellite internet access. Still, it’s better than waiting in line for 30 minutes of internet time in the internet cafe.
Since I do have access to the outside world through the internet, I’ve been able to track all the immigration marches, protests, and counter-protests that have been going on. Frankly, the whole illegal immigration business disgusts me. It’s a worn-out line, but what part of “illegal” don’t they understand?
Mind you, I have a wife who is an immigrant (legal) and many of my former girlfriends have been immigrants (also, all legal). Their nationalities consisted of Thailand, Argentina, Mexico, and Lebanon (hey, I like exotic-looking women). So, I don’t have anything against someone legally entering this country - no matter what the color of your skin or your nationality. But, when I see illegals and those that support them, marching down the avenue waving flags from another country, demanding that the American taxpayer not only accept their presence but pay for their health care and education - then I have issues.
I don’t know that I’ll be joining the Minutemen building fences on the border when I get back. I also don’t know that my superiors in the National Guard will look too kindly on me being an open advocate for so-called “vigilante” groups on the border. I do know that the whole situation stinks. But looking at the line-up of politicians on this issue - how do I vote? The Republicans, who you would think would be of the same mindset, are often the ones extolling the virtues of amnesty-by-another-name programs. And the Democrats? Forget it! Libertarians? The worst of the bunch!
Just as the Democrats have a schism developing between those that want us to leave Iraq immediately, and those that see an early out as counter-productive; so do the Republicans have a split developing between those that oppose illegal immigration and want to crack down on it, and those that keep talking this B.S. policy of guest workers.
