An actual border war?
As much as the rhetoric of the reconquistas bugs the hell out of me, and I believe our federal government is falling down on the job when it comes to border security, I have avoided falling into the paranoid trap of believing that the country of Mexico really thinks it can take back control of the American Southwest.
Others, of course, have fallen in head first. For example, over at the American Daily, William H. Calhoun has written a piece detailing what he believes a war between the U.S. and Mexico would look like. I find fault in his analysis on many levels.
First, the state of Mexico is in no position to start any kind of war within the United States. It has neither the economic might nor military strength to attempt such an adventure. Even if a second civil war began here, with one or more of the southwestern states attempting to secede from the Union and merge with our southern neighbor, the U.S. military would absolutely crush the secessionist rebels and Mexican Army within a few short weeks. Then, it would be “on to Mexico City!” (But, who would want it?)
Calhoun claims it would be a guerilla war, with the millions of illegals and their supporters either participating in or supporting the conflict. Even Hispanics in the military would jump ship and join the separatists, forming a separatist army. Calhoun believes up to 60 million Hispanics of all backgrounds would be supporting the separatist movement.
I find that number very hard to believe. First, Americans of every nationality or ethnic background other than Mexican – and that includes the majority of persons from all of the other Central and South American countries - would be opposed to the secession. Second, the majority of American citizens of Mexican descent would be opposed – they are Americans, remember? And even if they emigrated here from Mexico, why would they want to go back? Finally, just because you are here illegally from Mexico, doesn’t mean you would take up arms to fight in a civil war. I think the average Mexican peasant, just here to earn a living for his family, would pack up the kids and head south to avoid the backlash that would surely follow.
Even if Calhoun’s claim of 60 million internal enemies is valid, compare that to the other estimated 236 million U.S. citizens in this country - people who would be vehemently opposed to a quarter of the United States breaking off to join a third-world country. Calhoun acknowledges that in his guerrilla war scenario that counter-secessionist militias would spring up – and I totally agree with that view. Thousands of gun-toting Unionist Americans would stream to the Southwest from every part of the country, ready to do their part. It would be a very dangerous time indeed to be a secessionist.
No, in my view, the calls for re-conquest and the dream of Aztlan are just that – a dream. Behind all of the chest-thumping rhetoric by the radicals, the chance of the American Southwest actually being taken over by Mexico is nearly zero. Mexico could not support such a war and the American public wouldn’t stand for it.
