It’s getting more apparent that my unit is about to leave Iraq. That realization really hit me when I returned from leave and my unit was packing up most of its equipment.

The way things work over here, we basically have to pack all of our weapons, radios, and other equipment in sealed shipping containers 30 days out from when we are actually supposed to leave. So, that leaves us with damned little left over to do our jobs. Plus, we had some extra vehicles we had acquired from another unit, and we are now required to return them.

So now, we really have damned little left to do our jobs. Most of our computers are packed away, so we are all sharing time on a few that are stay-behind. The HMMWV I was driving is turned it, so I’m now doing a lot of walking and bus riding. I’ve started taking my personal lap-top into work, just to get something done.

The personal stuff I brought, bought over here, or had shipped to me has also all been sealed up to be shipped home. Some of the little niceties I had here - a small television, portable DVD player, microwave, and a miniature refrigerator are all now packed away or are about to be sold to an incoming soldier. The television and portable DVD player are shipping home, so I’m left with my laptop and some books for down-time recreation.

Now, I am looking at only about 30 days until I leave Iraq for Kuwait. We’ll spend only a couple of days in Kuwait (hopefully), and then be on a plane to Fort Bliss, Texas. Again, hopefully, we’ll only be a few days there before we are put on a bus for home.

The unit that is due to replace us will be here a little over two weeks from now, and we will perform something called a “Relief in Place / Transfer of Authority” or RIP/TOA. Basically, for five days my replacement will follow me around while I teach him his new job. The second five days he is in the driver’s seat and I follow him around, answering his questions and helping him. The way it worked for me, by Day 5 I was pretty much ready to roll, and I only had the guy I was replacing with me a couple of hours during the day, “just in case”.
