Abducted soldier was Iraqi-American
I’m still at Fort Bliss, impatiently waiting until I can get the hell out of here and back to my home state. Unfortunately, that’s not until Wednesday. In the meantime, I am blogging from the Post Exchange food court, as there is a WiFi connection there.
The story of the Iraqi-born U.S. soldier Ahmed Qusai al-Taei, who was recently kidnapped in Baghdad, blew up while I was in transit from Iraq, and I haven’t had a chance to do anything with it until now. Go here for the back story.
Al-Taei took many chances marrying an Iraqi while deployed, and even more chances visiting her parents, alone, in Baghdad. It is against military regulations for U.S. soldiers to marry local nationals, and this is a clear example of why that regulation is in place.
I am afraid there will not be a happy ending to this. To my knowledge, no U.S. soldier has been released unharmed since the end of the major fighting at the beginning of this war. Everyone else has been killed - often very brutally - and, in the case of SGT Keith M. Maupin, 20, of Batavia, Ohio, is still missing in action. He disappeared in April 2004 in an insurgent attack on a fuel convoy west of Baghdad. One private contractor also remains missing.
Please keep SGT Maupin and Ahmed Qusai al-Taei in your thoughts and prayers.
