A scholarship for "Caucasian-Americans"
As a white guy, I had to laugh at this one.
Boston University’s College Republicans are offering a $250 scholarship to a White person. Here’s the requirements, as outlined by The Daily Free Press:
The application for the $250 scholarship, due Nov. 30, requires applicants be full-time BU undergraduate students and one-fourth Caucasian and maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA. Applicants must submit two essays, one describing the applicant’s ancestry and one describing “what it means to you to be a Caucasian-American today.”
Myself, I am married to an Asian woman. Her previous husband was Black. My two step-children, who outwardly appear to be typical African-Americans, have lived with me for most of the last 10 years. I know full well that when it comes to scholarships, my step-children have a much better chance at scoring one, simply because of their ethnicity.
Is it right or wrong? As a young man, graduating from high school, I know there were a whole host of scholarships I couldn’t even attempt to compete for, simply because of my race. Did I think it unfair? You bet.
In this day and age, people should not be judged by their ethnicity, but what they are capable of doing. I’ve been in a position to hire personnel on numerous occasions, and my philosophy has always been the same - the best person for the job, no matter their gender or ethnicity. Sometimes, the White person got the job - other times, they didn’t.
Undoubtedly, many will become angry at this little protest gesture by the BUCR. But really, all they are doing is showing that labeling by race is patently unfair. You would think the College Democrats would be saying the same thing - but you know damned well they are not. Likely, more of that White guilt I’ve already talked about.
