Fixing the Army’s advisory teams
I posted here about the Military Transition Teams, who are essentially the trainers for the Iraqi Army, and how they are often short-changed when it comes to training, qualified personnel, and support.
In this NYT piece, the Army is making an effort to fix those described issues by improving their training, their staffing, making the teams larger, and possibly even pushing advisors down to the company or platoon levels.
For me, this sounds like a welcome change. The party line I regularly heard in Iraq was, “We’re training the Iraqis to secure themselves, so we can all go home.” Hopefully, with these changes the Army is making, that can actually happen.
