It’s not going to matter in the overall balance of power in the House, but Republican J.D. Hayworth of Congressional District 5 in Arizona still has a fighting chance of keeping his seat (despite the fact that the Associated Press has proclaimed his opponent Harry Mitchell the winner).

Hayworth was on Sean Hannity this afternoon saying that almost half of the votes in his district hadn’t been counted yet - all of those mail-in ballots that are often times turned in to polls on the day of the election. By Hayworth’s estimation, the majority of those mail-in ballots are likely Republicans, and even assuming they don’t all vote for him, he should be able to make up his 6,000 vote deficit.

Naturally, as a conservative, I hope he wins. On a personal note, I ran into Hayworth many years ago at an Arizona State University football game when I was a neophyte newspaper photographer and he was a sports reporter for one of the local television stations in Phoenix. A young female reporter friend of mine told me later that he had once made a pass at her - and he was married. I didn’t witness the event myself, so I can’t verify its veracity, but imagine my surprise when he later ran for Congress.
