More liberal fallacies about the military
I must be on a roll today - I’ve found yet another example of a liberal trying to create a stink about the military, when she really doesn’t know what she is talking about.
Over at the Smirking Chimp, Margie Burns is making a federal case about a soldier finding his helmet penetrated by a bullet (he wasn’t wearing it at the time), apparently originally fired up in the air as celebratory fire. She is trying to make the case that the Pentagon and a GOP-led Congress is fielding crummy armor to soldiers and marines, because a bullet went through that helmet.
Here’s the deal. The helmets currently worn by soldiers, the Advanced Combat Helmet, is a step up from the previous PASGT helmet known by most troops simply as the “Kevlar”. It was called the Kevlar, mostly because that’s what it was predominantly made out of. The ACH is a step-up mostly because it is lighter, fits better, allows you to hear and see better, all while giving slightly better protection than the previous Kevlar and being fully compatible with NVGs and other accessories.
And that level of protection? If I’m not mistaken, the ACH is rated for shell fragments and bullets up to 9mm submachinegun - a slightly more powerful version of the standard 9mm Parabellum you can buy in any gun store. Rifle bullets, especially those fired at closer ranges, can and will go through it. When fired from longer ranges, it’s possible they may have lost enough velocity for the helmet to stop the round. There are plenty of stories of soldiers being struck by shell fragments or shot in the head by rifle bullets, wearing these helmets, and surviving the event.
Will the helmet stop every type of munition that is thrown at it? Of course not. If it could, it would probably be so large and bulky as to be unwearable. There’s a trade-off in armor. The more you are wearing, the less you can move around. You sacrifice mobility for protection, and that’s been the primary problem of military armor designers since the Stone Age. Even now, troops are being issued add-on armor to their current Individual Body Armor vests that many avoid wearing - because it’s bulky and prevents easy movements.
