The U.S. plans to stay indefinitely in Iraq - is that really surprising?
The Nation is crying that the U.S. is investing millions in several bases in Iraq making them “permanent” and that this fact is going unreported. My reply to that is “tell me something every soldier in Iraq doesn’t already know.”
I’ve already said in this space that the concept for Iraq, in my opinion, is to be a bridgehead into the Middle East, a base of operations in the middle of that strategically vital area - bordering terror-sponsoring states Iran and Syria. It’s been a well-known fact amongst most military planners in Iraq that this is the beginning of a new “Korea”, meaning, we aren’t going anywhere soon - war or no.
All these calls for withdrawal are ridiculous. The plan from nearly the start of OIF has been to quell the rebellion, form a democratic government friendly to the United States, and then use that country as a base of operations for the rest of the Middle East. Is that really so surprising? I didn’t sit in on any senior-level strategy briefings while I was in Iraq, but I figured that out pretty quickly - and all from unclassified sources.
Look at Kuwait. Nobody is calling for us to leave Kuwait, but that war’s been over since 1991. You don’t hear any liberals whining about our troops there, do you? Of course not, because there’s no fighting there. Yet, we have thousands of soldiers in Kuwait right now. I could say the same thing about Japan, Germany, the Philippines, and a half a dozen other countries.
I’m not telling any state secrets here when I say that yes, the plan is to turn over responsibility of security to the Iraqis, reduce the number of bases in Iraq down to a select few, and maintain an indefinite presence in that country. Do you think we would really go to all this trouble and expense, just to pull completely out of the country? Get real.
You want to know a dirty little secret? Despite all this “de-fund the war” and “bring the troops home” crap the Democrats at the federal level are throwing around - they know the truth too. They know our involvement there goes beyond the surface, and that there is a greater strategic imperative for this war. Don’t let them fool you. They may push for reductions, but you won’t see any of them talk about pulling ALL of our troops out.

Reading this, and then looking at the situation in Congress now… damn, I think you put TOO much faith in them.
