From the Associated Press:

WASHINGTON - Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, a political science professor whose support for conservatism catapulted her into the post of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, has died at 80. She was the first woman to hold the post.

Initially a liberal Democrat, Kirkpatrick championed human rights, opposed Soviet Union communism and supported Israel.

“She defended the cause of freedom at a pivotal time in world history,” President Bush said Friday. “Jeane’s powerful intellect helped America win the Cold War.”

Jeane Kirkpatrick kicked ass and took names in the United Nations. Even back in 1988, I would have voted for her for President - had she run. Truly, this nation and the world are better places due to the efforts of the Cold Warriors of that era - Ronald Reagan, Caspar Weinberger, Jeanne Kirkpatrick, and our ally Margaret Thatcher, among others. Most of them were young adults during World War II and understood what tyranny meant.

How sad many in this country have forgotten the lessons of that time.

Update - The famous Kirkpatrick “Blame America First” speech. In many ways, as relevant today as it was back then.
