According to today’s Washington Times, a proxy war between Sunnis in Saudi Arabia and Shiites in Iran is the inevitable consequence of an American failure in the war in Iraq.

The Times quotes sources who believe that an American withdrawl from Iraq, which leaves the Iraqi government weak, will allow for an even wider spread sectarian war with Saudis supporting the Sunnis and Iran supporting Shiites. It also threatens to increase the standing of Al-Qaeda in the region.
