An excellent read
Many moons ago, in what seems like another life, I was a young photojournalist. At that time, I thought the greatest assignment a news photog could get was a combat zone. I mean, what greater news story is there than a war? While still in college learning that trade, someone asked me where I wanted to be in five years, and I said, “on assignment for Time magazine, in the middle of a battle.”
Young and dumb? Maybe a little, but that was my goal. Life didn’t present me that option, however. I gave up journalism (long hours, low pay) shortly after the first Gulf War (didn’t make it over for that one) and managed to become Active Guard/Reserve. I never regretted that move for many reasons, but sometimes I get that inkling to go back to my original life’s work…
Michael Yon is living my original dream - shooting photos and writing stories, embedded regularly with American forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. He regularly beats up the military for
its failings, but does it to point out the inequities sometimes visited on troops. He’s a sincere advocate for the troops and sincerely wants to see them succeed in their efforts in this Global War on Terrorism.
He doesn’t post often, but when he does it’s an interesting read. I recommend you add him to your RSS reader.
