I’m beginning to see a pattern in the news coming out about the Iranian capture of 15 British sailors and marines.Whether she is or not, the Iranians apparently have decided that Leading Seaman Faye Turney, the sole female sailor captured by the Iranians, is the weak link in the British armor.

In the videos we’ve seen, she’s been apparently told she can’t wear her military uniform, and has been forced to wear a head-scarf. Also, only letters written by her have been made public - and in each of the two letters, Turney has said things negative about the British military or government. In addition, she has said things very positive about those who captured her. In the second letter especially, the language was stilted and formal - obviously dictated to her by her keepers. Here’s some of the language I’m talking about:

“Unfortunately during the course of our mission we entered into Iranian waters. Even through our wrongdoing, they have still treated us well and humanely, which I am and always will be eternally grateful,” the letter said.

“I ask representatives of the House of Commons after the government had promised this type of incident would not happen again why have they let this occur and why has the government not been questioned over this? Isn’t it time for us to start withdrawing forces from Iraq and let them determine their own future?”

Finally, only she was going to be released early - before the Iranians backed off that claim.

Perhaps the Iranians, using the typical Muslim mindset, think the female’s plight will provoke a greater sympathetic reaction in the UK and somehow cause the British government to do whatever it is that the Iranians want.

UPDATE - Prime Minister Blair is saying that he won’t negotiate:

“The important thing for us is to get them back safe and sound, but we can’t enter into some basis of bargaining,” Blair said. “What you have to do when you are engaged with people like the Iranian regime, you have to keep explaining to them, very patiently, what it is necessary to do and at the same time make them fully aware there are further measures that will be taken if they’re not prepared to be reasonable.

“What you can’t do is end up negotiating over hostages; end up saying there’s some quid pro quo or tit for tat; that’s not acceptable,” he said.

UPDATE - Our favorite useful idiot, Rosie O’donnell, proves once again that you don’t have to be intelligent to have a multi-million dollar contract to make stupid comments on television.
