Last of my photos from Iraq
The last shipping containers my unit sent home from Iraq - way back in September - have finally arrived. Digging through some of the stuff I shipped home at that time, I came across these photos. They are of the last trip outside the wire I took, to a little nearby village. This is me, striking a pose. I was going for a Clint Eastwood / John Wayne look with the cigar and all, but didn’t quite make it. Note all the body armor that supposedly we aren’t getting over there. Frankly, I think it’s too much. In fact, I wasn’t even wearing the side armor plates that day. Talk about bulky!
Here’s one of the local kids who was giving us the “Mister-Mister” treatment. Basically, they keep repeating “Mister-Mister” until they get your attention. They wanted candy, pens, pencils, or anything else hanging off of your uniform. If you weren’t watching them, you could lose something valuable - like a pistol! This one wanted his photo taken, so I obliged.
Looking back now, I’m very glad to be home. I thought I’d want to go back again, to “finish the job”, but those feelings quickly dissipated when I got home.
A friend of mine, now a retired Sergeant Major, is packing up to leave for Iraq this next week. He’s going back to work for EODT, pulling site security at one of the FOBs. He’s only been back home from our deployment since November, but now he’s going back to make some real money.
The liberals would call him a mercenary. I call him a guy using his military-acquired skills in a new civilian occupation. Too bad I can’t retire for awhile yet - I might have joined him (emphasis on the ‘might’).
