There’s a bit of a splash circulating around the blogosphere about this memo, which was also cited by the Washington Post. Basically, the memo says that due to delays in convoys, some items will not be available at dining facilities in Iraq.

Of course, the left is making much hay of this, claiming that the surge is failing and this is somehow proof of that failure.

A couple of things - first, the validity of the memo is in some doubt. It’s in a format I never saw while in Iraq. It certainly isn’t military, and I sincerely doubt it’s from KBR - who have the logistics contract and would be doing any necessary apologizing or explaining. It’s possible it’s from the U.S. Embassy, but it still looks too cheesy for a real government document. The eagle in the upper right corner is the photo of a statuette that people have on their desks. It can also be found here, being used as clip art.

Second, short-term shortages in DFACs in Iraq are not uncommon. It’s happened for years. It doesn’t mean everything’s going to hell in a hand-basket. We had small shortages back when the generals were saying we could reduce the number of troops in Iraq.

So please, everyone calm down on this issue. All this means is that we don’t have any lettuce for our salads, or they are out of milk for a couple of days - no big friggin’ deal.
