There’s been quite a bit of hootin’ and hollerin’ on the right side of the blogosphere regarding this story. I had expected a lot more of a push from the left on the fact that the Iraqi government was, at least tentatively, asking the U.S. to leave Iraq. But in fact, the right has been much more vocal about it - mostly pointing out that this is simply an attempt by the Moqtada Al-Sadr supporters to push their agenda, and that the chance of it passing is slim.

The bottom line is, despite what the Truthers and the radical Left will tell you, Iraq is indeed a sovereign country. If that country’s government tells us to pack up and go home, we are obligated to do so. Iraq is not part of the American “empire”. The extent of America’s so-called empire is Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, and few small islands in the Pacific. Not really much of an empire, is it?

Should we pull out of Iraq, it won’t be pretty. Iraq will become a failed state, or probably worse, a Islamofascist Shiite-run theocracy with close ties to Iran. Hundreds of thousands will be murdered or simply disappear. Undoubtedly, it will then be an enemy of the United States.

Wouldn’t that be a kick in the teeth?
