Three soldiers missing in Iraq
UPDATED and BUMPED (again)
As an American soldier, the last thing you want to happen to you in Iraq is to be captured. During my tour, two soldiers were captured and later found dead, beheaded and otherwise mutilated. As a result of that attack, the requirements for numbers of vehicles, personnel, and types of weapons in a patrol were increased.
Now, it seems to be happening again with five soldiers dead and three missing. I fear the worst for those guys. Hajji loves to capture soldiers, because it make for good propaganda - snuff films seem to sell pretty damn well in the Middle East. Frankly, those three captured soldiers may have been better off joining their five compatriots in the hereafter during that initial firefight.
UPDATE - A group affiliated with al Qaeda is claiming they have these American soldiers. I cannot emphasize how bad this is for these guys. Our enemies completely ignore any pretense of following the Geneva Conventions and only a miracle will keep these three from becoming propaganda material of the worst kind. I’m praying for them, but they are in the hands of pure evil right now.

UPDATE - Iraq Slogger is saying that this patrol consisted of only two vehicles - which is against MNF-I rules, as I recall. Last I heard, three vehicles (two being gun trucks) and nine personnel were the minimums. It’s sounding like this group was short on both accounts. Also, interpreters aren’t armed, so they shouldn’t have counted him in their numbers to make nine. Not good.
