Today, I’m honoring SGT Elijah Tai Wah Wong, an Arizona Army National Guard soldier who died in Iraq on 9 FEB 04.

I didn’t know SGT Wong that well, but I knew several of the soldiers in his unit and I saw first-hand the effect his death had on his friends and family. The impression I got of SGT Wong was that he was a dedicated soldier, enthusiastic about being with his unit and doing his part.

As Wong was the first Arizona guardsman killed in OIF, and an Asian, his story became well known throughout the state and was widely publicized. Later, the armory his unit is stationed in was named after him.

SGT Elijah Wong, I salute you on this day. I trust that you are in a much better place.
