Peter Clothier, writing in the Huffington Post, poses that question. You won’t be surprised to find out that he doesn’t feel the need to have one.

I hope never to find myself in a situation where I would have needed one to protect my life–though I concede that this is a dire possibility in a country where guns seem so prevalent. They are designed for only one purpose: to kill. And I myself am enough in tune with Buddhist teachings to believe that the taking of life is wrong in any circumstance–and, yes, that includes the saving of my own

Well gosh, Peter. I’m glad to hear you don’t feel your life is worth saving. For my own part, I like my existence just fine and I don’t feel the need to sacrifice it to some wacked-out meth-head looking for an easy score and doesn’t want any witnesses. But hey, to each his own.

I’m not naïve enough to believe that I wouldn’t resort to violence in order to preserve my life, but I would not prepare for that contingency with the purchase of a gun.

Hmm, maybe that’s because you’re just a big wuss.

So how do you plan to stop the malcontent who’s storming into your home, beating your family members to within inches of their lives, and demanding money? Shower them with love? Ask them “pretty please with sugar on top will you please leave my home?” What level of violence are you willing to exert?

How could anyone in their right mind believe that those who authored the founding documents of this country intended that fire power be readily available to morons and maniacs alike (”militias,” anyone?)–let alone weapons of a destructive power that would have been unimaginable to those good men?

Well Peter, I don’t recall any mention of maniacs being part of the “militia” discussed in the Second Amendment. Actually, it’s illegal for criminals and mentally disturbed individuals to have guns. I find myself lying on gun purchase applications all the time when I get to that whole “are you mentally competent?” question.

In the case of the recent mall shooting, the gun used was stolen. So what, you’re suggesting we take guns from law-abiding persons, to preclude criminals from stealing the guns and using them for criminal purposes?

I am perplexed. Here is candidate Rudy Giuliani, formerly a rational proponent of gun control to stem the violence in the city of which he once was mayor, now doing a volte-face in order to escape the displeasure of the National Rifle Association and its followers.

The followers of the National Rifle Association are more commonly known as the “Republican base”. So yeah, I’m not surprised a guy running for the Republican nomination would do that about-face. I perplexed that you can’t figure that out.

Luckily, guys like Pete here are not necessarily the spokesmen for the Democratic Party. There’s plenty of liberal Democrats out there who own firearms. Yes, I was shocked to hear that too.

As gun owners, we all need to get together on our 2nd Amendment rights. Conservatives and Liberals can argue about Bush, Iraq, the War on Terror, whatever else - but we need to be holding hands and singing Kum-By-Yah on gun rights.
