I try to avoid pointing my readers to another blog post and telling them to read it in its entirety. In this case however, I’ll make an exception. Any attempt to try to summarize it here wouldn’t do it justice.

The blog post is entitled “Rumsfeld’s victory: a retrospective look at our de facto flytrap strategy in Iraq”, and makes the case that Rumsfield expected chaos in Iraq following the invasion, and used that chaos to defeat the insurgency in general and Al Qaeda in particular.

I know what you’re thinking - “DT, you’re nuts. Iraq was a mess under Rumsfield’s watch.”

Yeah, maybe, but read the article and see what I mean. The author, Alec Rawls, uses quotes from captured Al Qaeda communications and actually makes a pretty good case for why he believes Rumsfield was right and why we are slowly but surely defeating Al Qaeda and Iraqi insurgents. He also points out how the anti-war left and the Western media fell right in line with our enemy’s propaganda machine.

Check it out.
