Video: Army deploying new sniper rifle
The new M110 is basically a souped-up M16, using a 7.62mm round (.308 in civilian form) instead of the M16’s 5.56mm (the civilian .223 REM). The 7.62mm is common in the U.S. military, as it’s also used in the earlier M24 sniper rifles and the M240 machine gun. Because it uses a larger and heavier bullet, it will kill at longer ranges and have greater penetrating power.
As the M110 looks very similar to the standard M16, American snipers will be less likely to be targeted by enemy snipers. Also, since it’s semi-automatic, the American sniper can fire at multiple targets much quicker than having to manually work the bolt of the older M24.
Hmm, I think I know what my next firearm purchase will be…(yes, with a five-round magazine, it’s legal for hunting).
