I know I’m going to make a few people in this audience a wee bit jealous when I tell you - I’m going to be at the Super Bowl tomorrow.

My team is working the event as part of the overall security and incident response package. I can’t tell you exactly how many private security, police, fire, and various other government monitoring, security, and response personnel will be there (mostly because I don’t know) - but there’s going to be a butt-load. Just in my Special Operations sector, I’m estimating several hundred. Overall, I wouldn’t be surprised if the total number is in the thousands.

A lot of what I know about the security, I’d rather not say in this forum. However, what I can tell you is that it’s really significant. I’ve worked other major events before, and I’ve never seen the level of security or government agency involvement like I’ve seen for this one. Anyone and anything going into the stadium are going to be checked, scanned and monitored. The surrounding environment is going to be monitored for all manner of nasty stuff. The National Guard is prepared to react. The FBI has a command center in downtown Phoenix with representatives from a whole alphabet soup of federal agencies at the ready. That’s just all the things that have been reported in the news - I’m not even mentioning the stuff that hasn’t.

Bottom line - no one wants any bad guys doing anything to ruin the show. And if they do try something, we’ll know pretty quickly what’s going on, where to respond, and have plenty of hardware in place to deal with the situation. At least, that’s the plan. Really, knowing what I know, if I were a terrorist, I’d probably pass on trying anything at the Super Bowl. The gains wouldn’t be worth the risk.

Now, some of you probably think my team and all those security personnel I mentioned above are going to be having a great time and see the game for free. Actually, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Personally, I’ll be watching the game on a big-screen TV at the command center, about two miles from the stadium. I’ll never set foot in the stadium during the game. The small number of my guys who will actually be in the stadium will be moving constantly working on their gear. They’ll be lucky to sneak a peek every once in awhile. In fact, I’ll probably see more of the game on the TV we’re watching, then the guys actually in the stadium.

But enough of the serious stuff, let’s talk some football.

The Patriots are going to win. It’s a damn shame my Cowboys got beat by the upstart New York Giants, but the Giants are going to get thrashed. I think the whole Tom Brady in a walking cast is just a scheme to fool the Giants. I seriously doubt there’s anything wrong with him. Even if there were, what does he have to do but hand-off and throw?

What I really want to know is, will the command center have the Lingerie Bowl on at half-time? (skip ahead to the 24 minute mark for the kick-off)
