Whenever the Iranians come out with some new weapon system and crow about how great it is that they’ve developed this thing, I immediately start doing an internet search to see if there’s something out there they are just copying.

Sure enough, the Iranian S-200 anti-aircraft missile is just such a copy. They are very proud of this new missile, but folks - it’s 1967 technology, based on an obsolete Soviet design.

It’s a radar-guided, medium to high altitude air defense system. It sits on tracks, so I’m guessing it’s for fixed installations only and isn’t particular mobile - unlike the Patriot. Watch the first 90 seconds, and note that they don’t actually show it hitting anything - normally, a standard for weapons demonstrations. Unless you speak Farsi, the rest will bore you.

I’m sure the Iranians think it’s a big deal that they are building it indigenously. But you know, the Iraqis thought they had a super-cool air defense system before the Gulf War. See where that got them?
