Mitt and Ron are out, and John’s in. What’s a conservative to do?
Although I’m a conservative, I’m not a registered Republican. I used to be, but they’ve pissed me off lately and I felt like I had to part ways for awhile.
I’ve poked around at some of the other conservative parties and found that they were either (a) way too open on the borders [Libertarians], or (b) pushing way too heavy a religious agenda [Constitution Party]. Both have good points in their platforms, but I think I’ll just fly independent for now. Besides, there’s still the issue with wasting a vote on a candidate from one of those parties that doesn’t have a snow-ball’s chance in hell of winning.
The primary is over in my state and McCain won there. With both Mitt Romney and now Ron Paul out, that leaves poor old Mike Huckabee. Although many are saying he’s more of a conservative than McCain, he’s not going to get the Republican nomination. I’m not even sure why he’s still in the race, given his current delegate count.
So, as a conservative, I’m now stuck with an arguably liberal Republican. Or, I could vote for one of the two Democratic candidates, who seem to have so many similarities in their platforms, that the only way to tell them apart is by which one wears the pants and which one wears the pant suits.
I know there’s lots of conservatives out there who are talking about sitting out the election or even voting for a Democrat, to protest John McCain’s perceived liberal tendencies. I’m not one of those.
The Department of Defense says that as an active-duty soldier, I can’t say who I’d vote for in this blog. So be it. However, I will tell you that in good conscience, I can’t sit this one out or vote for someone I don’t believe in just to do some sort of tiny protest. Come election day, I have to decide who is the best candidate to be called my Commander-In-Chief, and who is best equipped to protect my rights as an American citizen.
Exit question - Now that Ron Paul has bowed out, will the Paulnuts please shut the eff’ up? I’m sick of your stupid YouTube videos, your hand-made rEVOLution signs hanging everywhere, and all the conspiracy theories about how Paul’s been kept down by the media and “The Man” in the Republican Party. Ron Paul may have had some decent ideas, but it was fanatics like yourself that helped undercut his campaign. Really, it was like a friggin’ cult of personality.
Wake up people! He wasn’t the Messiah! (That’s reserved for Obama.)
UPDATE - Sorry, my bad. Paul isn’t completely out. He’s just backed off. I’m not sure what the difference is, but he doesn’t appear to be a real contender anymore. So does this mean I can bad-mouth him or not? DoD regs aren’t particular clear on that point. Just to be safe, I’ve deleted any negatives comments about him from this post.
