MilBlogger dies in Iraq, leaves humerous posthumous post

MAJ Andrew Olmsted, an Army officer and military blogger, died recently in Iraq from an IED. I didn’t know the gentleman, but going back through some of his old posts, I realize what a witty, articulate blogger he was.

- Double Tap is my nom de plume. I am a U.S. Army officer who served in Iraq from November 2005 to late October 2006. Following my return, I served two years as the commander of a National Guard Civil Support Team, trained in responding to the terrorist use of CBRNE agents. Currently, I work at the state headquarters, coordinating military support to civil authorities. I'm unabashedly conservative, but I try to remain intellectually honest. This is a mosque located on our FOB. No American was alloowed inside - even if you were security (like me) or an American Muslim.
If you fly much in Iraq, then you've likely been on one of these - a C-17. They are much better to fly in than C-130s.
I would love to tell you what this mural says, but I never got it translated. I'm pretty sure it dates back to when the Iraqi Army and Air Force were still under Saddam. It was located in a building on our FOB.
Here's a couple of the Iraqi Army soldiers we had living on our base. Not exactly Western standards, but they tried.

A McDonald's sign I saw at Ali Al Salim base in Kuwait.
This ammo can was on the top of one of our HMMWVS and took the force of a IED attack. It probably saved the life of the gunner.
This a friend of mine, working for EODT security. He was actually deployed with me, but retired as a Sergeant Major after coming back and starting working for EODT back in Iraq. He's striking a tough-guy pose, but he's really the nicest guy you could meet

This chair, located in the Al Faw palace was once owned by Saddam. It's a favorite spot for soldiers to get their pictures taken (can you tell?).
I was able to visit the Ah Shaw(sp) palace in Baghdad - one of Saddam's old haunts and now the home of MNC-I. These columns were huge.
This photo was making the email rounds while I was in Iraq. Reportedly, it was a wolf captured in or around Baghdad. I don't know that wolves are indigenous to Iraq, so it could have come from the zoo.
Here's what it looked like as we boarded the plane to fly to Iraq. I remember being both excited and nervous at the same time.

Believe it or not, this is what they served for dinner one night. I think it was a case of a Turk not translating to English correctly.
